Women account for more than half of driving licence holders around the world, yet they remain surprisingly under-represented in the automotive sector. Of around 250 motoring journalists currently working in the UK, fewer than 20 are women – a fact that recently caught the attention of Porsche Cars Great Britain.
In late 2021, ‘We Drive’ was created. A programme developed to bring aspiring female journalists into contact with established industry professionals, offering the next generation of creatives the opportunity to refine their skills. Providing expert advice and hands-on media experience alongside the opportunity to get behind the wheel of a Porsche.
To turn We Drive from vision to reality, Porsche Cars Great Britain approached Erin Baker, Editorial Director at Auto Trader UK and one of the country’s most highly regarded female motoring journalists. Baker, an advocate for greater representation in the industry, reached out to her followers on social media and was immediately swamped with interest from applicants of all ages, from a wide variety of social and professional backgrounds, and from across the UK and beyond.
The decision was taken to run the first We Drive event in tandem with the UK launch of the new Macan, the model with the highest proportion of female buyers in Britain. Groups of aspiring journalists and presenters enjoyed workshop sessions with Baker and other leading figures in photography and the wider industry, with every participant given the opportunity to create their own review of the SUV.
The We Drive programme has continued to offer support and guidance to its first intake and has already helped several participants on their way to permanent positions within the industry. The next We Drive event is scheduled for later this month, with the intention of running four each year and the hope that similar schemes will be rolled out in other Porsche markets around the world.

*Data determined in accordance with the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP) as required by law. You can find more information on WLTP at www.porsche.com/wltp . For Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) range and Equivalent All Electric Range (EAER) figures are determined with the battery fully charged, using a combination of both battery power and fuel.
Values are provided for comparison only. To the extent that fuel and energy consumption or CO₂ values are given as ranges, these do not relate to a single, individual car and do not constitute part of the offer. Optional features and accessories can change relevant vehicle parameters such as weight, rolling resistance and aerodynamics which may result in a change in fuel or energy consumption and CO₂ values. Vehicle loading, topography, weather and traffic conditions, as well as individual driving styles, can all affect the actual fuel consumption, energy consumption, electrical range, and CO₂ emissions of a car.
